I would like to first start out with a 3 part article which ran in the local paper (Rosemarie & Dave Wuterich), Record-Journal 02/25/2007, Page B01
Wuterich supporters hope to raise awareness and funds through Web site By Adam Wittenberg Record-Journal staff MERIDEN " They've found their voice, and an online community that cares, prays and believes. Family members of accused Marine Staff Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich have started a Web site to raise awareness of his case and bolster his defense. The site, www.frankwuterich.com, contains information on Wuterich, who grew up in Meriden, and on the November 2005 incident in Haditha, Iraq, for which he is under investigation in connection with the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians. Wuterich and seven other Marines were charged two months ago on counts ranging from murder to dereliction of duty. Wuterich, a 1998 Platt High School graduate, was the squad leader during the incident, and received the most severe charges. Family members and supporters across the country have maintained his innocence, and the Web site is one effort to counteract what some say is a media-driven attempt to take down these Marines as a way of opposing the war. "This gets the word out about Frank, said his father, David Wuterich, who lives on Meriden's west side. "The more positive stuff out there, the better. David Wuterich said his son is "hanging in there since returning from Iraq in April. Frank had hoped to be discharged in June, but that was put on hold when allegations of wrongdoing arose in May. He has remained on base at Southern California's Camp Pendleton, working in building maintenance. His wife, Marisol, gave birth to their third daughter, Jadabell, on Dec. 29, one week after the charges were filed. An Article 32 hearing, the first step in the military justice system, is scheduled for June 4. That will be followed by a review, which will determine whether the matter is dismissed or sent to a court martial, or military trial. "He's pretty sure it's going to go all the way, David Wuterich said. "That's basically because of the media. National and international press have swirled around the incident, with some describing the Haditha incident as a massacre, a term Frank's attorneys have vehemently denied. David and his wife Rosemarie also posted a letter about Frank on www.freerepublic.com, a conservative news and discussion site. In less than a week, there were more than 100 replies, most of them overwhelmingly positive. Part 2 of 3 Record-Journal 02/25/2007, Page B02 From Page B1 Wuterich "God bless the Marines and your son, wrote one user. "The wrong people are in prison. "I will be praying for your son, wrote another. "He was there fighting for our freedom and safety. I am disgusted about the Haditha charges and allegations. David Wuterich said he and his wife find the responses encouraging, and they have posted their thanks. They also hope the attention will help raise money for their son's defense, a cost David described as astronomical. "We're looking to do a fundraiser in town for him in the spring, he said. Mark S. Zaid, one of Frank Wuterich's attorneys, said he's seen other clients use Web sites effectively to raise money and educate people about a case. "Scooter Libby and the Clintons have done Web sites, Zaid said. "This case, unfortunately, has become a partisan case for both the left and the right for different reasons. Frank's not alone in this, but he has greater notoriety because his name is the most bandied about. awittenberg@record-journal.com (203) 317-2231 |
Part 3 of 3 Record-Journal 02/25/2007, Page E01 They're in for the duration Some of us know right from wrong and some of us don't. Take U.S. Rep. John Murtha " please! The first time most of us learned of his amazing moral clairvoyance came last year, when the Pennsylvania Democrat announced on national TV that U.S. Marines had "killed innocent civilians in cold blood during a Nov. 19, 2005 incident in Haditha, Iraq " long before anyone had been charged with, let alone tried for, let alone convicted of, anything at all. Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich, who grew up in Meriden, is one of the Haditha Marines now under indictment. If only we could enlist the congressman's awesome mystical powers in our judicial system (where it takes actual evidence to convict somebody of a crime, and where people have the right to defend themselves, and where things often turn out to be not at all what they at first seemed) just think how much money we'd save and how many terrible mistakes we'd avoid. Maybe then a celeb in Los Angeles with fancy lawyers couldn't commit two murders and walk free. Maybe then a nobody from Hartford like James Tillman wouldn't have to do 18 years for a rape he didn't commit. Instead, we'll just have to soldier on with the cumbersome, slow and error-plagued system we have, which seems to bend over backward to ensure the rights of even the lowest of the low: the serial wifebeater, the child molester, the seller of drugs to children, the career criminal who's never put in an honest day's work in his life. But that's the civilian courts; most of us have no idea what to expect from military justice, so we can only wonder whether our men and women in uniform " those who devote a big chunk of their lives to protecting us; those who put their lives on the line, day in and day out for months at a time, under conditions of physical and mental stress that most of us couldn't or wouldn't tolerate for five minutes; and all for some abstract ideals like "duty and "honor " can expect anything like that much protection. But back to the congressman. I said that the "in cold blood remark was the first reading we ever took from his moral compass, but it's not the only one. Back in 1980, he met with a couple of undercover FBI investigators who were offering bribes to get some unnamed "sheik into the country illegally. Here's a piece of that conversation, from The American Spectator: FBI AGENT: I told Howard we were willing to pay. And, OK, [opens the drawer and shows money] I went out and got the fifty thousand. >From what you're telling me, you're telling me that's not what, you know, that that's not what you ... MURTHA: I'm not interested. FBI AGENT: OK. MURTHA: At this point. FBI AGENT: OK. MURTHA: You know, we do business for a while, maybe I'll be interested, maybe I won't, you know. Now I'm not saying that some day " you've made an offer. It may be that I'll change my mind some day ... at this point, that's all I'm interested in. For taking a rain check instead of a bribe, Mr. Murtha was able to avoid arrest and become an even bigger shot in Congress. And this is the kind of guy who thinks he's qualified to judge Frank Wuterich. This is going to be a long struggle, and the whole family is in for the duration.
